Our Story
Hi, I’m Ben and I’m the owner here at Captain’s Custom Shop. This business is my passion project
To tell you how it all started, I’d like to introduce you to one of my first woodworking projects, from about 30 years ago. This little wooden sailboat sign I made for my Grandma, when I was first old enough to start to use the tools in my Dad’s shop. I made it for her, because I wanted to give her something to commemorate our shared love of boats, and the color blue. I cut it from a simple piece of plywood on a scroll saw and painted it with craft paints. I’m glad to say she lived long enough to see me earn my Captain’s license and grow up to earn a living on the boats we both loved. I’m proud to say that for as simple as that project was, it still works just as intended. It still brings joy and a reminder of a shared love, even though it hangs on my wall now. I’m also proud to say my repertoire of woodworking skills has grown immensely from my youth.
When my Wife and I bought our home and needed to furnish it, we ran into a problem. We couldn’t find anything that was our style, quality and affordable. So, I started to set up my own shop, and build the things we needed, the way we wanted, and made to last. As time went on, I kept building new projects and a better shop. What started as a personal project grew into a full-fledged business dedicated to meeting the unique needs and tastes of our clients.
At Captain’s Custom Shop, we believe that you should furnish your home with things that reflect your personality and fit seamlessly into your space. That’s why we offer a wide range of customization options, from colors and sizes to unique features and styles. That super cute idea you saw on Pinterest can be yours now, just the way you want it. All without the need to go buy thousands of dollars’ worth of tools and spend years learning how to use them. Or settling on something you don’t love just because that’s what they had in stock.
You’ve got a guy, and my name is Ben. I still love building things for people, and I’m excited to see what we build together.

Do you provide materials?
Yes! We provide all lumber, hardware and finishes required for your project. We pride ourselves on sourcing our lumber from sustainable sources. Our primary suppliers having FSC certification. We can use customer supplied materials as well, although we ask for the opportunity to inspect customer supplied materials prior to finalizing your bid. Some customer supplied materials may require additional labor or time to dry and stabilize before we can proceed.
Can you color match what I have now?
Yes, we can match the species and color finishes that are in your home now. As always, the more details the customer can supply for brand and color, the better the outcome may be. Some species of wood will change color with exposure to UV light, which means your newer project will take some time to age and patina to match your homes original materials. This is a natural process that occurs, just like variations in color and grain patterns varying from board to board even from the same tree.
Do you provide project management for larger projects?
We are a licensed specialty contractor, WA license #CAPTACS711QA. The state requirements for specialty contractors do not allow us to hire or manage other sub-contractors for you. So, for projects that require the work of several trades, the customer has the option of hiring a general contractor who will manage the entire project for them or acting as their own general contractor and hiring individual specialty contractors for each phase or part of their project. WA state requires that if you act as your own general contractor, you hire only licensed contractors and are aware that each will be responsible for acquiring their own permits.
How long does a project typically take?
The design phase of our projects typically takes a few days from the time we first receive your request until we agree upon a design and move to production scheduling. Production times vary based on the size and complexity of the project, but most projects will require a minimum of 3-4 days due to the drying time of wood.
glues and finishes. Larger projects such as furniture orders may take several weeks to complete. Installations typically only take 1-2 days, except for larger trim or cabinet projects which can take up to a week. We will provide accurate estimates of our current scheduling when we supply you with your bid, and your place in our schedule will be set when we receive your deposit.
