Our Story

Hi, I’m Ben, the proud owner of Captain’s Custom Shop.

This business is more than just a job to me — it’s my passion.

Let me share a story that embodies the heart of what we do. About 30 years ago I made a simple wooden sailboat sign for my Grandma. It was one of my first woodworking projects, crafted from a piece of plywood on a scroll saw and painted with craft paints. This sailboat symbolized our shared love for boats and the color blue. Despite its simplicity, this little sign brought joy to my Grandma and continues to bring joy to me as it now hangs on my wall, a cherished reminder of our bond.

This early project taught me something profound: the value of creating something special and unique for someone you care about. It’s a principle that continues to guide my work today.

When my wife and I bought our home, we struggled to find furniture that matched our style, quality standards, and budget. So, I set up my own shop and started building what we needed. What began as a personal endeavor quickly grew into a full-fledged business dedicated to creating custom pieces that resonate deeply with each client.

At Captain’s Custom Shop, we believe that your home should reflect your personality and be filled with pieces that have meaning and lasting value. That's why we offer a wide range of customization options, from colors and sizes to unique features and styles. Whether it's a charming idea you found on Pinterest or a unique vision you have in mind, we can bring it to life exactly the way you want it.

You don’t need to settle for mass-produced furniture that lacks character or spend a fortune on tools and years learning how to use them. With us, you’ve got a guy who loves building things that are special and unique, just for you.

I’m excited to see what we can create together, turning your ideas into beautiful, custom pieces that will be cherished for generations.

Our Values

We believe that wood is probably the best medium to build with. It’s beautiful, it’s all natural, sustainable and long lasting. We strive to use verifiably sustainable sources, such as certified suppliers. Because sustainability is important, but sadly not ubiquitous.

We We believe that you should stand by your products, so we offer a 5 year limited warranty on all of our products. Complete details available in our bid package.

We believe that giving back is important. We donate a portion of all our proceeds to One Tree Planted, to support re-forestry efforts around the world. We do this so that we can all enjoy forests and trees and clean air for many more years to come.

We believe that building your bespoke project should be a fun and exciting adventure, so we are always here for you just an easy call away at (888) 230-8629.

Do you provide materials?

Yes! We provide all lumber, hardware and finishes required for your project. We pride ourselves on sourcing our lumber from sustainable sources. Our primary suppliers having FSC certification. We can use customer supplied materials as well, although we ask for the opportunity to inspect customer supplied materials prior to finalizing your bid. Some customer supplied materials may require additional labor or time to dry and stabilize before we can proceed.

Can you color match what I have now?

Yes, we can match the species and color finishes that are in your home now. As always, the more details the customer can supply for brand and color, the better the outcome may be. Some species of wood will change color with exposure to UV light, which means your newer project will take some time to age and patina to match your homes original materials. This is a natural process that occurs, just like variations in color and grain patterns varying from board to board even from the same tree.

Do you provide project management for larger projects?

We are a licensed specialty contractor, WA license #CAPTACS711QA. The state requirements for specialty contractors do not allow us to hire or manage other sub-contractors for you. So, for projects that require the work of several trades, the customer has the option of hiring a general contractor who will manage the entire project for them or acting as their own general contractor and hiring individual specialty contractors for each phase or part of their project. WA state requires that if you act as your own general contractor, you hire only licensed contractors and are aware that each will be responsible for acquiring their own permits.

How long does a project typically take?

The design phase of our projects typically takes a few days from the time we first receive your request until we agree upon a design and move to production scheduling. Production times vary based on the size and complexity of the project, but most projects will require a minimum of 3-4 days due to the drying time of wood.

glues and finishes. Larger projects such as furniture orders may take several weeks to complete. Installations typically only take 1-2 days, except for larger trim or cabinet projects which can take up to a week. We will provide accurate estimates of our current scheduling when we supply you with your bid, and your place in our schedule will be set when we receive your deposit.
